Our official name is the OIE Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology and Risk Assessment of Aquatic Animal Diseases. But we simply call ourselves ERAAAD. We are one of fifty World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) collaborating centers globally.
Formally established in 2010, we are a bi-national collaboration between the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) of the University of Prince Edward Island and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI).
What we do
The principal role of ERAAAD is to operate as a global centre of research, expertise, standardization of techniques and distribution of knowledge in the specialized area of aquatic animal diseases.
We believe we can help solve these health challenges. We apply the scientific techniques of epidemiology and risk assessment to reduce the global impacts of economically significant aquatic diseases.
In addition, we want to improve food security worldwide. We use our independent expertise in aquatic animal health as a resource for epidemiology advice and counsel to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the aquaculture industry.
Finally, we help build capacity for the OIE and its member countries by supporting the enhancement of veterinary competencies globally through research collaborations, training and participation in assessments of performance of veterinary services (PVS).
Our leaders
The leadership of the Centre rotates on a bi-annual basis between our two parent institutions. The two designated co-chairs are Dr. Larry Hammell from the AVC and Dr. Edgar Brun from the NVI, both OIE Experts in aquatic animal diseases and health.
For 2017, Dr. Hammell is the designated the managing Director and the principal contact for collaboration with ERAAAD.
